Jai Shree Krishna!
The Birthday of Shri Krishna popularly known as Janmashtami is knocking at the door and we couldn’t just keep calm. This is one of the major festivals celebrated widely across India, where the followers of Krishna dress up, and participate in various events like Jhaki completion or Dahi Handi. Temples get lit up and shops get loaded with Krishna’s favourite dishes and sweets.
On this pious occasion, the devotees also observe a fast and break it at midnight after the birth of Krishna by offering prayers and his favourite dishes. As we begin preparing for Janmashtami, there are many dishes that must be prepared as Vrat ka Khana. But we need to focus on including the food items which gives us energy and a fuller feeling of stomach.
Since Janmashtami fasting refrains from adding grains, our immunity weakens so we need to add food items which are healthy and support your fasting goals.
If you’re worried about which traditional Indian recipes you can eat, we are here to help you out! We have listed below a few sweet, savoury, and healthy Vrat ka khana that you can devour.
Take a look!
Makhana is a staple food during fasting. However, to add more flavour to it, this yummy North Indian-style dish “Aloo Makhana” made using makhana and potatoes without onion or garlic is an absolute delight to have. As Makhana is high in phosphorus and starch, this will keep you full and provide the required nutrition to your body. Combine this scrumptious and filling fasting sabzi with kuttu ki poori for an overall delectable experience.
The next in line is the delicious Sabudana Vada. This is a healthy snack served during fasting because of the immense health benefits it upholds. Being naturally gluten-free in nature, it is a great source of energy. It also keeps you full for a longer period due to the presence of dietary fibre in it. Serve it hot with homemade chutney and a glass of refreshing chemical-free cold-pressed juice by its side to enjoy a heavenly and nutritious meal.
For those who have frequent stomach-related issues, it is good to eat sabudana-infused recipes like sabudana khichdi, tikki or kheer because it tends to promote digestion.
One of the common things that can be easily found in every kitchen household is Dahi and we know how to make full use of it. It is so easy to make and prepared within 5 minutes. All you need is to add chopped apples to thick yoghurt. Add a dash of honey if you like it sweeter or a pinch of Sendha Namak to make it more flavourful as per your taste buds.
A glass of fresh and healthy buttermilk makes a great Janmashtami fasting item as it is full of nutrients up to the brim, and gives you a cooling effect which is extremely necessary in this hot & humid temperature while keeping you energised throughout the day. You can consider OMDAIRY’s Buttermilk which is made from A2 Gir Cow Milk and is great to give you a fuller feeling with other health benefits.
All-time favourite snack, roasted peanuts make a great indulgence as you observe Janmashtami fasting. Packed with nutrients, they offer a delightful way to keep your energy levels up throughout the day. Moreover, they can be made easily within a few minutes so you don’t need to spend hours in the kitchen. Embrace tradition and savour the goodness of roasted peanuts while paying homage to the divine celebration.
Kuttu Poori is something that everyone makes while fasting. But not everyone knows this lip-smacking recipe that can be made out of Kuttu This divine dish blends tradition and taste while satisfying your taste buds. Made from buckwheat flour, these light and fluffy treats are both wholesome and flavourful. Enjoy it with homemade green chutney for a divine experience!
The last one in our Vrat Ka Khana list has to be fresh and chemical-free juices. Drinking juices made with fresh and seasonal fruits without any additives or chemicals are perfect throughout the year and more during fasting as you need more fibre, increased energy levels, and a stronger immunity system. So either juice at home or buy from a reliable 100% natural juice brand like OMJOOS to get the maximum health benefits.
Krishna loves good food, and the Hindu fasting food list shared above consists of exactly the items that are immensely loved and eaten by those who observe fast. They are healthy, and tasty, provide nutrients to your body as you observe fast. Eat Sattvic Diet and ensure to avoid milk and peda during fasting as they are consumed while breaking the fast considering these are the favourite foods of Lord Krishna and the festival is literally incomplete without it.
